Homemade Pasta Sauce

Homemade Pasta Sauce 🍅🍝

Simple, Rich, and Full of Flavor

Making homemade pasta sauce is easier than many people think. With just a few basic ingredients, you can create a rich, flavorful sauce that tastes far better than most store-bought versions. This recipe is perfect for spaghetti, lasagna, or any pasta you love.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz / 800 g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 small can (15 oz / 400 g) tomato sauce or diced tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste (for richer flavor)
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

1. Sauté the onion
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3–4 minutes until it becomes soft and slightly translucent.

2. Add the garlic
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30–60 seconds until fragrant. Be careful not to burn it.

3. Add the tomatoes
Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir well to combine.

4. Season the sauce
Add the salt, pepper, oregano, basil, chili flakes (if using), and tomato paste. Stir everything together.

5. Let it simmer
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This helps the flavors develop and the sauce thicken.

6. Taste and adjust
Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed. Add a little sugar if the tomatoes taste too acidic.

7. Serve
Pour the sauce over freshly cooked pasta and garnish with fresh basil or parsley.

Optional Add-Ins

You can easily customize this sauce:

  • Ground beef or Italian sausage for a meat sauce
  • Mushrooms or bell peppers for extra vegetables
  • Parmesan cheese for a richer flavor
  • A splash of red wine for deeper taste

Storage Tips

  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 4–5 days.
  • Freeze in containers for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat gently on the stove when ready to use.

Once you try homemade pasta sauce, you may never want to go back to jarred versions. It’s simple, comforting, and packed with fresh flavor—proof that the best meals often come from the simplest ingredients. 🍝🍅✨
